Our very own Visions Founder Dr. Meera Pathmarajah was recently featured on TamilCulture.com, sharing her story of what inspired her to create Visions and outlining the evolution of her journey over the past 16 years…

Meera Pathmarajah was a young Southern California teen when an opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka came in the early 2000s. Travelling with a group of fellow Tamil youth interested in visiting their parents’ homeland, Pathmarajah toured areas ravaged by the Sri Lankan civil war. Touched by the countless children on her journey who would ask -- “Akka, eppa thirumbi varuvingal?” Sister, when will you come back? Pathmarajah returned to the States knowing her life would never be the same.

Honoring a Great Humanitarian - Governor Sudarshan Agarwal

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Governor Sudarshan Agarwal, who had served on our Visions India Advisory Board for the past few years. Governor Agarwal served as Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha for over 12 years and later on as the Member of the Human Rights Commission. He also served as Governor of the States of Uttarakhand and Sikkim from January 2003 to July 2008. He is a former President of the Delhi Gymkhana Club, former Director of Rotary International (1987 – 89), and an active supporter of the Him Jyoti School in Dehradun. He was a great humanitarian with a huge heart and a lifelong commitment to service. He is an example to us all, and he will be sorely missed.

At Visions, we emphasize not just the “service,” but also the “learning.” These are the 2 critical components that define the type of experience you will have if you decide to join us abroad. While we each have ideas, knowledge, experience, etc. to share with our friends abroad, we also have the opportunity and the responsibility to learn from our peers as they share their culture, their work, their experiences, and their lives with us. Our service-learning trips are driven by the idea that we are all equal and that we can help achieve development objectives best when we work together as allies & partners.
